Unseasoned vs Seasoned Wood

Wood that has just been cut has a high moisture content, and is often known as ‘green’ or ‘unseasoned’ wood. Contrary to this, ‘Ready to Burn’ wood has been left to dry for many months, and so, has a lower moisture level.

What Makes Good Quality Firewood?

The quality of the firewood you burn makes a huge difference to the heat it gives off, and the speed to which it burns. Ideally, the bark should crack and peel easily, and the wood sounds hollow when knocked.

At HOT Firewood, the logs in the bulk bags of firewood we supply have been air-dryed and split, so they are ready to burn. The wood in your tonne bag will be a mixture of soft and hardwood, meaning optimal burning conditions.

  • It’s best to choose seasoned firewood as it has a lower moisture content, and it burns more efficiently compared to unseasoned wood. For log burners, you want your logs to have a moisture content of 20% or less. This maximises heat output, minimises soot build-up, and significantly reduces harmful emissions. 

    Logs with high levels of moisture waste energy on evaporation, burn faster and create more creosote in your chimney, which also means more soot in your stove. You’ll notice the difference in quality and heat emission!

  • Due to its density, hardwood is better than softwood for firewood as it burns hotter and lasts longer. Hardwood also produces less smoke and fewer sparks, making it a cleaner choice for indoor heating. Softwood is typically better for quick heat or outdoor fires.

  • We park on your drive, or as close to your house as possible and use a tipper van to unload the firewood. For those who would like help stacking the wood, we provide an optional, additional fee of £20 per tonne bag.
